Zoisite's body burned all over, even in the cold region of the North Pole where Beryl had set up the D Point. He lay on the cold, hard stone bed and listened to the wind blowing through his and Kunzite's chamber. His uniform was made to protect him from the elements, as were his powers, yet they were fading.
He heard soft footsteps which he recognized as Kunzite's, and a scraping sound, like he was kneeling.
"I'm sorry, Zoisite... " Kunzite whispered, "I tried to ask Queen Beryl to revive you, but..." and he trailed off.
She had obviously told him no, and perhaps threatened to give either of them what she gave Jadeite - Eternal Sleep. Zoisite would choose death any day over the sleep. At least this eternal sleep would be restful, and wherever he was going, he would see his lover again and be waiting to run into his arms.
Summoning all the strength he could, Zoisite opened his eyes, looked up at Kunzite, and smiled. His lover lifted him up and supported him in a gentle embrace, and let him rest his head on his chest.
"I am happy," Zoisite replied, "For I will die in your arms... but please... grant my last wish..."
"What is it?" Kunzite asked, obviously hiding his pain since he was never really the one to show emotions.
"I want to die beautifully," Zoisite said, his breathing becoming more laboured.
With a sweep of his cape, Kunzite made a field of flowers, with the same ease as when he created that one single rose. Zoisite closed his eyes and took in the lovely scent and felt the sakura petals tickling his face. It stung a bit, but that couldn't be helped.
"It's so beautiful..." Zoisite sighed, reaching out for a petal, as Kunzite let go of his hand, "I'm so happy, Kunzite... "
The world was beginning to fade... Zoisite knew his next breath would be his last. Tears fell from his eyes, and ran down his cheeks as he spoke his last words: "I always loved you... Kunzite..."
His words sounded distant, a bit distorted and flanged, as did Kunzite's. Zoisite felt his hand fall, and couldn't lift it, nor could he breath. Yet he wanted to linger just a bit longer... just another second...
"Please forgive me, Zoisite..." Kunzite whispered.
Zoisite felt Kunzite's arms holding him close, heard Kunzite's heart beating... and breaking. He felt a gentle hand caressing his face, seeming to heal all the hurt as the world faded.
I forgive you... It's ok.... I just wish I could have stayed a little longer...
Zoisite felt himself falling into a dark void, and screamed for Kunzite, for anybody who could hear. There was no answer. What was this place? Was it hell?
"KUNZITE!" Zoisite cried out, as he landed on a flat surface, one which he couldn't see.
He looked around, then got to his feet. There was nothing but blackness. This frightened the young sky-king. Would he be staying here forever? Again, he yelled for his lover, not daring to take a step for fear of a trap. Then, light seemed to fill the room. It came from a tiny spot, which floated down towards him.
"Sky-King Zoisite," a voice spoke, "Welcome to Hades"
"Wh-who are you?" the frightened man whispered, taking a step back.
Ignoring him, the voice continued, "Do you want to live, Zoisite?"
Zoisite gasped. Was this... whoever or whatever it was... joking?
"Of course I want to live! I want to be with Kunzite!"
Tears ran down his cheeks as he thought of his lover. He would give anything to feel Kunzite's gentle arms around him again. Anything.
"You are getting another chance, Zoisite," the voice continued, "For someone has made a big enough wish... you will be sent back, but something must be taken as a toll... "
Zoisite gave the light creature a strange look, wondering what the toll would be. The light floated closer, then took on the form of a woman, one with two odango ponytails. The sky-king now remembered the voice of the light... Queen Serenity...
"Serenity... " he whispered, "How... "
"I don't know myself," the light being whispered, "But something must be taken as payment for your sins"
With that, she stroked his face and hair, and took his hand in hers. Bewildered, Zoisite looked into the bright, sad eyes of the dead queen's soul. Suddenly, the queen drew back her arm and flattened her hand, then jabbed at Zoisite's ribcage with her fingers.
"Oogh..." Zoisite grunted as he collapsed to the floor, the area where he was hit throbbing badly.
The queen lifted him up again, looked into his enraged, confused face, and jabbed him again, in the middle of his ribcage, where his heart was. Zoisite fell backwards again, with a cry, and felt as though his energy was being sucked out. It wasn't as bad as when Beryl had hit him with that energy blast as punishment for killing Endymion, but still, it took a lot out of him.
Zoisite tried to get up but felt the strength leave him, and fell back down. Gentle arms lifted him up, and the sky-king felt the queen's soul kiss him on the forehead. The kiss spread a refreshing coolness throughout his body, lulling him into a restful sleep.
"Bring light to this world... counteract the darkness you have spread... " he heard the queen say.
As he slept, Zoisite dreamed of mountains of flowers and their beautiful fragrences filling the air. The meadow was filled with green grass and sunshine, and hill after hill of wildflowers. His beloved Kunzite lifted him up effortlessly, swinging him around and around as Zoisite joyfully laughed. He felt Kunzite drawing him closer, and kissing him on the lips. Everything that had happened in the Afterlife began to vanish, but Zoisite did all he could to hold onto one thing... the most important....
"Bring light to the world.... conteract the darkness you have spread..."
He held onto those words, ignoring everything else.... and it faded.
Zoisite took in a breath and smelled some strange odors. He opened his eyes to see white light... was this heaven? Sounds began to fill his world, and he began to make the shapes out. They were people... and many were wearing masks on their faces. He found himself laying in a bed, and noticed several tubes and wires attached to his skin. He tried to pull them out, but then an alarm sounded, and in a few seconds, he felt strong hands restraining him and replacing the wire.
Finally, he awoke fully, and heard the people speak. They didn't call him by his real name though... not his Sky-King name Zoisite... they called him... Adrian Kirsch...
It was his civillian name in Switzerland, his headquarters before his death. Soon, Zoisite found out why he was in the hospital. He was there for heart problems and 'diabetes', and was still being tested to see how much 'insulin' he would need to keep his 'blood sugar' under 'control'.
"Kunzite..." he whispered, before playing a song on the synthesizer the hospital staff provided him with.
Somehow, he would find him. But he had to bring light to this world, and he would bring it through music, with all his soul. He would be Adrian Kirsch... the Dark Cherry.... and he would bring light... light from the darkness...
He heard soft footsteps which he recognized as Kunzite's, and a scraping sound, like he was kneeling.
